Intervention of a Family Play Therapy for a Child of a Family at Stake

Abstract

In this study, an effective family play therapy for children of families in crisis was evaluated, Family play is a form of play therapy, where all family members participate in play through this safe medium, the purpose of which is to promote children¡¯s healthy growth and development, thereby creating energy for change in the family system. To this end, an evaluation of a family play was conducted for each type of a child¡¯s problem behaviors, 50 families who had been referred to the Dream Start service and had requested family play therapy due to a child¡¯s problem behavior, were used as subjects in this study. The results evaluation of the family play revealed the following: Parents who lacked the parenting skills to encourage their children to complete tasks and to provide positive feedback to help them achieve a sense of accomplishment, tended to interact with indifference or criticism, maintaining the attitude of a bystander. Therefore, in order to promote more healthy communication and emotional interactions between parents and children in family play therapy interventions for children of families in crisis, therapists need to assist parents by providing family play activities using a safe and structured medium led by parents and it is necessary for those participating in family play to have an enjoyable experience. This study is meaningful in that it explored new directions in family play therapy intervention, and looked at how this can helps children of families in crisis have more positive interactions among their family members.
